Performing Arts Production Workshop

I’m going to be attending the Performing Arts Production Workshop in Trieste, Italy. It is being organised by TERENA, Internet2 and GARR.
“GARR will host the TERENA and Internet2 hands-on audio/video production workshop that will be held on 13-15 July 2009, at the Music Conservatory of Trieste, Italy. The workshop is meant to be the first in a series of annual events emphasising the equipment and staffing requirements for interactive performing arts education, multi-site performance events, and high quality netcasting over advanced networks.”
The workshop is intended to train people how to broadcast a live event. It covers video and audio production, along with encoding and streaming.
It is unusual; when you work for a National Research and Education Network (NREN), you use the phrase “bandwidth is not a problem”. It can be difficult to get this idea across to a vendor that you want a 1Gbit/s stream not a 1Mbit/s video stream. The workshop will be covering the higher end of streaming, no YouTube quality stuff here.

Data traffic from my site

I started hosting my own video content after YouTube disabled my account. I was transferring about 5GB per day on average when I host the site and image content. I thought the video hosting would increase the traffic rates by a factor of 10, but luckily it hasn’t. Currently I’m transfering about 10GB per day, only double the previous level. The hosting agreement allows 2TB per month with an additional charge of €29 per TB over that, plenty of head room for the moment.

Starting a blog again

I had a blog previous for scaryideas.com, but screwed it up while upgrade Wordpress and abandoned it. This is another attempt at a blog. Articles will hopefully follow.
